The Industrial Technology and Management Program (INTM) at IIT encourages professional development for graduate and undergraduate students by promoting opportunities with professional industry associations. Our current offerings include student memberships in local chapters of professional associations, promotions of industry-specific scholarships, and support for IIT’s Interprofessional Student Projects (IPROs).
Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)
INTM’s partnership with CSCMP offers students benefits that include:
- Networking receptions to connect with potential employers
- Participation in CSCMP’s Recruitment Day
- Placement in a CSCMP-sponsored Resume Bank
- Selected students represent INTM as part of a team of other students from different states at CSCMP’s annual global conference for 3,600 professional members, held in different U.S. locations each year.
Association for Operations Management (APICS), Chicago Chapter
The APICS IIT Student Chapter in collaboration with APICS strives to bridge the gap between industry and academia through on-campus seminars, lectures, and workshops, and off-site national student competitions and facility tours.
A highlight of IIT’s partnership with APICS is the annual Chicago Case Competition in which teams from different universities present case solutions to a panel of industry judges. The case studies illustrate how industry and business professionals plan for the future. The teams look at questions such as, when does the future start? What will the future look like? What preparations should be made. When should those preparations be implemented? INTM students also participate in the regional APICS Great Lakes Case Competition with more than 20 universities from the Midwest.
National Electric Contractors Association (NECA)
A subsidiary of NECA, the Electrical Contractors' Association of City of Chicago, Inc. (ECA) works actively with IIT to inform students about the benefits of careers in electrical construction. ECA members are experienced, proven contractors who have a record of providing quality, cost-effective services for the electrical industry, in commercial, industrial, and residential construction, telecommunications and advanced technologies. INTM adjunct faculty member, Dr. Dan Tomal, manages the ECA Student Committee at IIT to coordinate activities with ECA members. Dr. Tomal has taught IIT’s Interprofessional Project (IPRO) courses, sponsored by ECA for more than ten years. INTM students have worked on projects that include “Techno-Economics of Smart Grid Renewable Energy Technology”, designing energy efficient plans for Chicago's Soldier Field, and “Developing Insights that Support Energy Efficiency Improvement Strategies for Varied Build Environments", learning to enhance a landmark building's energy efficiency while adhering to the strict landmark status Building Codes at Chicago’s historic Victory Gardens Biograph Theater.
Additional INTM Industry Partnerships
INTM continually builds relationships with other professional organizations such as the Materials Handling Management Society Chicagoland Chapter and the Warehousing Education & Research Council (WERC) that invite students to participate in industry-specific events, and share information regarding networking and scholarship opportunities. Professional organizations wishing to work with INTM students should contact Herb Shields, INTM Adjunct Professor and Career Development Advisor.
