Why did you come to Illinois Tech?

Illinois Tech is a technology focused research university offering degrees in various disciplines and located in the midst of the great city of Chicago. The reputation and honors from the alumni drew my attention to IIT and I believe the course work offered here is of high standards. So far my belief is not broken, every day at IIT is a new day to learn something. Illinois Tech is the right place to learn the right things.

Why did you choose your major and specialization?

I was looking for a degree that would enhance my 4.5 years of professional experience and improve my managerial skills. After lots of research I figured out that Information Technology and Management was perfect for me. And, there are 12 ITM specializations offered at The School of Applied Technology. Initially I was confused which specialization to pursue. Luckily, my Advisor Angela Jarka helped me figure out the best suited specialization for me.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at Illinois Tech?

The best thing about being an Illinois Tech student is the ITM department of School of Applied Technology. The ITM Department helps keep us on track with our academic progress, notifies us of job opportunities, and keeps us updated on various events in and around the campus and the city. The ITM newsletter also keeps us posted with the various deadlines. I also like being in Chicago. When I have time, I go around the city, attend a few events, keep myself engaged and learn the culture.

How has Illinois Tech helped you?

Illinois Tech provides me a chance to work with the newest technologies. I interact with and learn from the Industry Professors in ITM. The professors teach me about the recent trends in the industry and prepare me for a career in the technology.

How are the courses like? How do they help you? (Prepare for jobs/career)

A wide variety of courses are offered in the ITM department and they are well structured for each specialization. The courses ITMD 510, ITMD 515, ITMD 565 helped me gain a better understanding of the concepts and the coursework was high quality and went way beyond my expectations. The course work helps me learn languages, tech concepts, management principles, and has even helped me to solve programs in interviews.

How is the academic experience? How does it compare to your previous educational experience?

The academic experience at Illinois Tech is really great. When comparing with my previous educational experience, the assignments here at IIT are tougher and make me analyze the concepts to gain a better understanding of the concepts. We also work on projects for courses that provide better learning with more real world applications.

How is campus life? What do you like to do?

The campus life at Illinois Tech is fabulous. Illinois Tech provides great infrastructure such as labs, gym, late night lab service hours, Keating Sports Center, The BOG, and Galvin Library are all fantastic. There are also numerous student organizations that help us pursue our interests, get to know other students and their culture, and help make new friends. I like bowling at The BOG.Thinking about the resources provided to you by your Department (labs, faculty, networking and career events, competitions), what do/did (alumni) you find most valuable and why?

Thinking about the resources provided to you by your Department (labs, faculty, networking and career events, competitions), what do you find most valuable and why?

There are many resources the ITM department has provided. I feel the Department Advising is the best. If you have a query, they are your SPOC (Single Point of Contact) for anything and everything. Right from the admission form to career services related question, they either have an answer or they know whom you should contact to resolve your issue.

Career placement/assistance?

IIT organizes minimum of 2 Career Fairs in an academic year. Career Fairs at IIT have top notch companies ranging from startup to big companies like Google, Microsoft, Boeing and others. The Career Fair App offered by Illinois Tech gives us the list of companies and their location high quality at the career fair, which helps you to plan your schedule ahead. The career service team conduct various workshops to enhance your chance of getting hired. Workshops include, resume writing, interview skills, and other placement related activities.

What were your concerns about coming to Illinois Tech?

I had few issues while applying for admission and the same was reported to the Graduate Admission team. I got an email response within 24 hours and things were resolved. The best part about IIT is that all of the Illinois Tech departments respond in a timely manner to issues.

Do/did you have an on-campus job? If so, what?

Yes, I had an on-campus job during my second semester. I worked as a Production Assistant for IIT Online team recording the lectures of various courses for the IIT Online students.

Where do you work?

Currently I’m interning at MathWorks Inc., Natick MA
Job Title: Quality Engineer

What type of projects or innovation have you done while at Illinois Tech?

Deadline Buzzer - ITM department had organized ITM Student Innovation & Prototype Competition. I created a prototype mobile application which buzzes as a reminder for submitting your assignment on Blackboard. The first time you use it you need to sync it with the BlackBoard application. After that, whenever an assignment or quiz or test is posted in BlackBoard, the app syncs itself and buzzes with your preferred time settings. Self-Explaining Chart Using D3 JS – I designed and developed a self-explaining chart for displaying a detailed analysis report under each category of theft that happened in Chicago during 2015.

How have you applied what you learned at Illinois Tech to your job?

The concepts that I have learned in ITMD 510 and the assignments helps me a lot to understand the framework and the design of a project. My job currently involves a lot of Java Scripts, the ITMD 565 course helped a lot in understanding the flow of the scripts, what the application code does, enhancing the existing module by writing new efficient codes, and debugging the scripts.

What is your proudest moment as a student?

My proudest moment as a student was getting an internship after my 3rd semester. Only a few students get the opportunity to Intern during the Spring season and obtaining an Internship during my 3rd Semester is unbelievable. Being hired by Mathworks, Inc and practicing what I learned helps me to relate things better than ever.

If I could do 1 thing over again it would be.

I have no regrets, I take whatever comes my way and I live in present, believe in future.

What is the biggest challenge you faced as a student?

The biggest challenge as a student is managing my personal, academic and work time. There are times that I go so busy that I forget to take a break. Getting use to this education system was little tricky at the beginning for me.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

I want to have my own startup in the Costume Design field that integrates tech systems with fashion designing.

Advice for other students:

A deadline is a deadline, no leverage on it. Organize your work, you will be fine. Illinois Tech provides career fairs to help you find a job. Use it wisely.
