Food Science Chair Leads Research Team that Suggests Avocados Can Suppress Hunger

Illinois Institute of Technology Associate Professor of Food Science and Nutrition Britt Burton-Freeman, who is also the director of the university’s Center for Nutrition Research, led a team of researchers that released results from a study on Tuesday, May 7, that suggests meals that include avocado in place of refined carbohydrates can significantly suppress hunger and increase meal satisfaction in adults who are overweight or obese.

The study, released in a paper titled “Using the Avocado to Test the Satiety Effects of a Fat-Fiber Combination in Place of Carbohydrate Energy in a Breakfast Meal in Overweight and Obese Men and Women: A Randomized Clinical Trial,” was published in April in Nutrients, a peer-reviewed journal.
